Project Founder and Lead Developer
I first got into robotics seriously in early 2000. My first robot was based on a kit from
Mekatronix, the
Talrik Junio PRO, and was powered by an 8-bit Motorola 68HC11 processor. In February 2001, I started the Open Automaton Project with the idea of developing a standard PC-based robot architecture. I spent quite a bit of time poring through books and academic papers on mobile robot software architecture, AI, vision, and neural networks, but I wasn't actually getting anything done on the project. I continued to build smaller robots, including
Lord Nelson, a 16/32-bit Motorola 68332-powered Mini Sumo robot with vision, I dabbled with BEAM robots for a while, and I created two other small 8-bit micro-powered robots. I made the decision in June 2003 to revive the Open Automaton Project, and focus all my robotics work on that one project for a while. And indeed, that is still the point I am at now; the cobwebs are forming on
Lord Nelson and its 8-bit companions, as I continue to focus exclusively on OAP.
